Constructing Simplicial Complexes over Topological Spaces

چکیده
The first step in topological data analysis is often the construction of a simplicial complex. This complex approximates the lost topology of a sampled point set. Current techniques often assume that the input is embedded in a metric – often Euclidean – space, and make significant use of the underlying geometry for efficient computation. Consequently, these techniques do not extend to non-Euclidean or nonmetric spaces. In this thesis, we present an oracle-based framework for constructing simplicial complexes over arbitrary topological spaces. The framework consists of an oracle and an algorithm that builds the simplicial complex by making calls to the oracle. We compare different algorithmic approaches for the construction, as well as alternate ways of representing the simplicial complex in the computation. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of our framework as a tool for approaching problems of diverse nature by presenting three applications: to multiword search in Google, to the computational analysis of a language and to the study of protein structure.

New methods for constructing shellable simplicial complexes
A clutter $mathcal{C}$ with vertex set $[n]$ is an antichain of subsets of $[n]$, called circuits, covering all vertices. The clutter is $d$-uniform if all of its circuits have the same cardinality $d$. If $mathbb{K}$ is a field, then there is a one-to-one correspondence between clutters on $V$ and square-free monomial ideals in $mathbb{K}[x_1,ldots,x_n]$ as follows: To each clutter $mathcal{C}...

We deene the notion of a Poincar e complex of sheaves over a topological space. Global surgery invariants of spaces and maps are expressed as the assembly of locally deened surgery invariants. For simplicial complexes we recover the theory of Poincar e cycles of Ranicki. For more general spaces we obtain local surgery invariants in the absence of triangulations.
متن کاملThe Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem
The Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem generalizes a collection of fixed point theorems for different topological spaces, including maps on the n-sphere and the n-disk. Although the theorem is easily written in terms of compact manifolds, in this paper we will work entirely with topological spaces that are simplicial complexes or retracts of simplicial complexes. After developing the fundamentals of...
متن کاملVertex Decomposable Simplicial Complexes Associated to Path Graphs
Introduction Vertex decomposability of a simplicial complex is a combinatorial topological concept which is related to the algebraic properties of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the simplicial complex. This notion was first defined by Provan and Billera in 1980 for k-decomposable pure complexes which is known as vertex decomposable when . Later Bjorner and Wachs extended this concept to non-pure ...
متن کاملThe Tidy Set: A Minimal Simplicial Set for Computing Homology of Clique ComplexesI
We introduce the tidy set, a minimal simplicial set that captures the topology of a simplicial complex. The tidy set is particularly effective for computing the homology of clique complexes. This family of complexes include the Vietoris-Rips complex and the weak witness complex, methods that are popular in topological data analysis. The key feature of our approach is that it skips constructing ...
